The dreams each country searches for most (2026)

Key findings

1. 1Two dreams rule the world: snakes are the most-searched dream theme in 16 of the 39 countries, teeth falling out in 14. The exceptions: spiders in Mexico, Argentina and Chile; death in Algeria, Tunisia and Iraq; pregnancy in Belgium; crying in Nigeria; lice in Jordan.
2. 2English speakers are fixated on teeth: "teeth falling out" makes up 35.7% of all dream-theme searches in the UK and 35.4% in Ireland, the most one-sided results of all 39 countries. In the US it is 27.8% (67,600 searches a month).
3. 3Snakes are almost everywhere: they make the top 10 in 38 of the 39 countries (all but Jordan), and take a third of all dream searches in Vietnam (33.2%) and 28.6% in the Philippines.
4. 4Tornado dreams are a North American thing: No. 6 in the US and No. 10 in Canada, and in no other country's top 10. Earthquake dreams reach the top 3 in exactly three places: Turkey, Japan and Taiwan.
5. 5Dream searches have a season: in 37 of the 39 countries the quietest month was June, July or August, and snow dreams peaked in December or January in every country where they are searched often.

The most-searched dream theme in each country

Choose a dream to colour the map by the share of each country's dream searches it takes.

English-speaking countries

Regional patterns

In the US, UK, Canada, Australia, Ireland and New Zealand, teeth falling out takes between a quarter and more than a third of all searches. Australia stands out with snakes at 12.9%, almost twice the Canadian share (6.6%).

India looks nothing like the other English-speaking markets: snakes (18.3%) lead, then gold, elephants and tigers. India is the only country where elephants make the top 10. In Nigeria, crying is No. 1; in South Africa, weddings are No. 3.

Spanish-speaking countries search for creepy-crawlies: spiders, cockroaches, lice and worms fill their top 10s. Worms make the top 10 in Mexico, Argentina, Colombia, Peru and Chile and nowhere else; in Peru, blood is No. 3.

Lice make the top 10 in all six Spanish-speaking and all ten Arabic-speaking countries we measured, and in no other. Gold makes the top 10 in Turkey, all ten Arab countries, Vietnam and India, but in no Western market.

East Asia looks different again: Japan searches most for teeth, fire and earthquakes, with tsunamis at No. 8 and being late at No. 9; South Korea has "killing someone" at No. 3; in Taiwan and Hong Kong, pregnancy dreams are No. 2.

The dream calendar: when people search

We also looked at the 12 monthly figures behind each average (September 2025 to August 2026). In 30 of the 39 countries, dream searches were highest in September or October, and in 37 the quietest month was June, July or August. Averaged over all countries, September had about 50% more dream searches than July. January was busier than December in 31 countries.

The mid-year dip also shows up in Australia, New Zealand, Argentina, Chile and Peru, where June to August is winter.

This dreamAll dreams, same countriesBars: each month against the 12-month average (1 = an average month).

• Snow: in all five countries where snow dreams get at least 1,000 searches a month (Turkey, Japan, Algeria, the US and Saudi Arabia), searches peaked in December or January. In Turkey they went from 67,600 in June to 181,000 in December.
• Cockroaches: in the 12 northern-hemisphere countries where they get at least 1,000 searches a month, cockroach dreams held steady from June to August while dream searches overall fell, so their share rose in all 12.
• Scorpions: the same summer pattern, in 8 of the 9 countries where scorpion dreams get at least 1,000 searches a month.
• Gold in India: the sharpest single spike in the data. Searches for gold dreams jumped to 27,980 in November 2025 and 18,980 in December, against 2,320 to 3,400 a month from February to August.

One year of data cannot separate a yearly rhythm from a longer trend: part of the fall between late 2025 and mid-2026 may simply be a general drop in searches. We will know more when the study is repeated.

Methodology

We chose 58 common dream themes and wrote, for each language, the one to four ways people actually type them into a search box — "dream about snakes", "snake dream meaning", "rüyada yılan görmek", "蛇の夢", "تفسير حلم الثعبان". Countries that share a language use the same list.

Search volumes come from public search-volume data for Google searches: the average number of monthly searches over the 12 months from September 2025 to August 2026, collected in September 2026.

For each country, we added up the volumes of a theme's search phrases. Phrases the data groups together as close variants (identical monthly figures) were counted once. "Share" is a theme's searches divided by the searches for all 58 themes in that country.

Volumes are published in rounded bands (for example 1,000, 1,300, 1,600), so small gaps — Saudi Arabia's 5,920 for snakes against 5,870 for teeth — should be read as ties. The monthly figures are rounded the same way, so they do not always average exactly to the 12-month figure.

What this data can and cannot tell you

• A search is not a dream. These numbers show which dreams people look up, not how often they have them; frightening or puzzling dreams are probably searched more than pleasant ones.
• Compare ranks and shares, not raw totals, across languages. Turkish speakers use one standard phrase ("rüyada … görmek"), while English speakers spread their searches over many phrasings we could not all include.
• Mainland China is not included because Google is not its main search engine; Chinese-language results come from Taiwan and Hong Kong. Some words are ambiguous (French "voler" means both to fly and to steal).
• We measured 58 themes and only their base phrases. Long qualified searches ("for a single woman", "that bites") are left out, which lowers totals most in markets that search that way, notably Arabic ones. No personal data was used: only aggregated search counts.
• Some countries were measured in one language only: English in India, Nigeria, the Philippines, Singapore and South Africa; Arabic in Algeria, Tunisia and Morocco; German in Switzerland. Searches in other local languages are not counted.
