Was it a prophetic dream? Find out what kind of dream you had
People have always asked whether a dream meant something. First pick the tradition that speaks to you — Christian, Islamic, Jewish or psychological. Then five short questions look at the signs that tradition itself describes, and the result shows what it says about your kind of dream.
A reflection, not a prophecy or a religious ruling.
This quiz cannot know where a dream came from or what the future holds. It shows what each tradition or theory says, and it is not a religious ruling or medical advice. For a religious question about your own situation, ask a pastor, priest, imam or rabbi. If nightmares or poor sleep keep coming back, talk to a doctor.
What the traditions say about kinds of dreams
The Bible tells of God speaking in dreams to Joseph and Daniel, yet also says that “a dream comes when there are many cares” (Ecclesiastes 5:3). The hadith name three kinds: a good dream from Allah, a sad one from Shaytan, and what a person tells himself (Sahih Muslim 2263). The Talmud says a person is shown what comes from the thoughts of his heart (Berakhot 55b). Psychology sees dreams as the sleeping brain handling memories and feelings.
How the quiz works
Nothing can tell for certain what a dream was, and none of these traditions asks you to. You pick one tradition, then answer five questions about how you woke up, how clear the dream was, whether it echoed your day and what it left you with. The answer you give most often decides the result; a tie goes to the most common, everyday kind of dream.
Questions people ask
How do I know if a dream is prophetic?+
You can’t know for certain. Every tradition here says most dreams come from our own thoughts and cares, and the ones that seem to carry more are weighed carefully — against Scripture, with prayer, or with someone wise — never acted on in fear.
Why can I choose a tradition?+
Because each tradition reads dreams in its own terms. Mixing them would say nothing true about any of them. Pick the one that speaks to you; the link on your result lets you see how the others read the same dream.
What if I keep having bad dreams?+
An occasional bad dream is normal. If nightmares come back often, wake you up or leave you tired, speak to a doctor — frequent nightmares and poor sleep can be treated.
